A Day in the Life of a Student
Grades 6-12
1-2 class periods
Objectives
The objective of this lesson is for students to explore and describe their home, lifestyles, and culture for their partner schools, and to understand the daily realities of life in another country. Since we know September is a busy time with the start of the school year, we planned a simple introductory activity for the students to get to know each other as their collaboration starts.
Materials
Computers with Internet access
PowerPoint (if not available, students can use Microsoft Word)
Digital camera or scanner (if not available, students can use photos from the Internet)
Email access to send presentations and participate in forums (not needed for every student, but at least one teacher, student, or administrator address is needed for each school group)
Suggested Procedure
Opening
Explain to the students that we are embarking on a full year of collaboration between US and their partner schools. To start the collaboration, we want the students to learn about their counterparts' daily lives. Questions to ask your students:
What you do in a typical day?
When do you get up and go to bed?
What do you eat and when?
>
# Who your friends and families are? What they wear?
>
What movies and television shows do you watch?
>
# What hobbies and sports do you do after school?
>
Using a mixture of photos and text, student teams from each school will prepare a presentation in PowerPoint (or a document in Microsoft Word) describing a typical day in their lives. The students can create the structure and design of the presentations themselves, but they should be encouraged to keep the focus on a typical school day.
We also encourage students to link to their favorite websites, compile information in Excel graphs, or use any other computer program to best illustrate their day to students from their partner country.
All groups should complete and submit their presentations by Friday, September 22nd.
Teachers should email the presentations to their partners, AND the RI-SOL representative so they can be posted on the website. Presentations should be sent no later than Friday, September 22nd, 2006.
“Media” forum will be held Monday, September 25th – Friday, September 29th
This is an opportunity for your students to ask questions about their partner schools’ findings and publications. Please have your students go online to your partner country’s website (see addresses below) and view their partner’s presentation before they enter the forum.
