Our Group:
Our group consisted of our Global Bridges class, with collaboration on the website part from students in Macedonia. For more information on the individuals in this group, please visit this site: http://www.globaleducation-2020.org/site/index.html

This project brought our class together as a group, teaching us to work with each other toward a common cause. We had to discuss the individual talents that we each possessed so that we could assign different jobs to each person. Not only did this help make the project a success, but we also learned a lot more about our classmates. We made a website to inform everyone of the need to ensure education throughout the globe. After doing this, we all agreed that more needed to be done. We decided as a group to split up into different sections: Food Fast and Fair Trade. We all learned a lot about our XBSS School in Africa, which is what we were raising money for. Those who researched Fair Trade also learned the importance of labor and just wages for everyone involved. All year, our group worked together to discover new things about ourselves and some of the problems the world faces: education and just wages.

Our Cause:
Our group is working to end unjust trade practices, and to essentially promote social justice, as well as improving education around the world. The purpose of our project was to raise money to help develop our Xaverian Brother’s Sponsored School (XBSS) in Africa. We did this through the fair trade fundraiser, which was also making sure that workers were entitled to just wages. We have used our strong background knowledge in global education to complete this project. Not only have we educated ourselves, we have educated the rest of our student body on the seriousness of this issue. Our Talents:
This project allowed us to combine all of our talents in order to make this project successful. Our participants learned to be better leaders by taking the responsibility to help our school in Africa as well as the Fair Trade Organization. We researched information to learn what Fair Trade stands for and how they manage to pay all of their workers equally and still sell their candy bars for a relatively cheap price. We learned about our XBSS School in Africa so we would know how our donated money would be spent and how they are in need of it. We were able to show off our salesmanship by selling thirty candy bars per person to our classmates and friends. In order to complete this project, we had to use our talents and speakers and teachers to inform our consumers about what we researched. Those who participated in the Food Fast were able to work together to sacrifice their food for a day. Those who participated in the Fair Trade aspect of the project were able to sell many candy bars to support corporations that use just wages. As a group we were able to raise a sufficient amount of money.

Our Project:
For this project we were working on a local level for an international cause. One group sold Fair Trade candy bars to raise money for our Xaverian Brothers Sponsored School in Africa (see link), while another raised donation money, also to benefit our XBSS School.
The students who sold candy were required to research Fair Trade, a trade practice which ensures fair payment for everyone in the process of creating the goods. The students then went around to all of the other classes to inform them about fair trade practices and to sell the fair trade candy bars, which cost $1.25 a bar. Each student participating in this part of the project was required to sell 30 bars. Some of this money was returned to the original company to ensure that the workers were paid fairly. The rest of the money we raised was sent to our XBSS School in Africa.
The other group raised money through donations and participated in a Food Fast to send funds to our XBSS School. They worked together over a night spent at the school to give up food for a 24-hour period and educate themselves about global problems, particularly in education. They also worked to obtain the donations which were sent to the XBSS School, and researched it so that they might inform those whom they wished to donate exactly where the money was going, and why. In doing this they brought awareness of problems in education not only to themselves, but to everyone who donated money.
